Zavičaj (Au Pays Natal)

Zavicaj restaurant in Paris' Clignancourt quarter is subtitled 'Au Pays Natal' but it all means the same thing: homeland. This Serbian restaurant brings the very soul of Serbia to Paris, from its authentic 19th-century peasant decor to the beautifully and proudly presented specialties of the house. Just to put you in the mood, the walls are stucco and stone with exposed beams and photos of Serbian life, hand-woven cushions adorn the wood banquettes, crockery and work implements are found displayed here and there and the servers greet you in traditional dress. The warm welcome is the real thing, too. Dishes include the familiar like moussaka and more adventurous things like national dish pljeskavica au kajmak, a sort of beef and pork hamburger with farmers' cheese served in pitas.
