The state of New York, with an estimated twenty million residents, is the 4th most populous state in the USA. Albany is the capital of New York State, but its economic engine is New York City. With a population of around eight and a half million, NYC is the most populous city in the United States, a global city with a huge impact on world’s commerce, finance, media, art, fashion, research, technology, education, entertainment, etc. NYC is also the premier gateway for legal immigration to the United States. Therefore, some Serbs who came to America to achieve the American dream, settled in this area and now there are around forty thousand people of Serbian ancestry in NY state. Serbs preserve their culture, language, traditions and cuisine in their households, Serbian Orthodox Churches (St. Stephen Church in Lackawanna and Cathedral of Saint Sava in NYC), Consulate General of The Republic of Serbia in New York City, some ethnic institutions, schools, institutes, associations, clubs, etc. Serbs often run some local businesses (cafes, restaurants, bakeries, grocery stores, etc.) inspired by their motherlands cuisine and traditions. Do not miss to visit these places and experience Serbian hospitality, tasteful cuisine, traditional drinks and authentic Balkan music far away from Serbia in “The Empire State”.
